Bobby Varey crossed the line first in today’s F 900 R Cup Main Race – but was later disqualified from the results for a technical infringement.
As a result, defending champion Barry Burrell was declared winner, after finishing second, just 0.027secs behind Varey.
Varey started the 12-lap race from pole position but it was Christian Smith who got the best start, hitting the front into Turn One – but it took Varey just a few moments to get ahead, as Burrell moved up to P2.
The top three settled into position and it stayed the same all the way to the flag. Burrell stayed in close contact with Varey and had a few looks to try and pass but ultimately couldn’t find any way through.
Backmarkers came into play on the final lap, with Varey able to pass them a little easier which was enough to keep Burrell at bay, allowing the Bobby Varey Racing machine to cross the line first, 0.027secs clear of Burrell as Smith took third with Dale Thomas fourth and Kieran Smith fifth.
Nikki Coates, who had been leading the championship at the start of the weekend, had to start from the back row following a crash in yesterday’s Heat, as did Josh Corner who went out with him.
Both managed to push through the pack, with Coates making it all the way to seventh at the flag.
Shortly after the race, Kieran Smith was also disqualified from the results for a technical infringement. With two of the top five out, this promoted Bjorn Estment to fourth and Coates to fifth.
