Quattro Group British Supersport Championship: Bold Currie pips Stapleford in photo finish

Ben Currie stole the Sprint win from Luke Stapleford after an opportunistic bold move on the final lap of today’s Sprint race.

Currie had led off the line as polesitter Jack Kennedy dropped down the order, while Currie’s McAMS Yamaha team-mate Harry Truelove slotted into second place. The Yamaha’s stayed ahead until Lap Four when the Scars-Racing Ducati of Stapleford dispensed with them both in one move to hit the front.

Behind, rookie Jack Mahaffy was soon in a battle with countryman Billy McConnell as Kennedy and his Honda Racing UK team-mate Dean Harrison were also running together.

Mahaffy was served a long lap penalty and dropped behind the Hondas on Lap Eight while up front Stapleford was still ahead, although he was never able to get himself a decent gap.

Currie was never far from his rear wheel and by the last lap was snapping at his heels. A mistake through the Esses for Stapleford gave Currie all he needed to make a move into the Loop.

Despite Stapleford hitting the inside to try and cut him off, Currie rode around the outside and had the inside line going into Goddards for the final time. They were side by side as they approached the line, but it went to Currie by just 0.040s

Truelove took the third podium spot as Kennedy managed to salvage fourth ahead of Harrison.

Cam Swain crossed the line p10 to take the Cup class win, with Adam Hartgrove second and Ben Tolliday third.
