Callum Grigor returned to Donington Park last weekend, completing the final run to the start line as he continues his ongoing recovery from a crash at the circuit last season.
Grigor was involved in a crash on the opening lap of the Pirelli National Superstock Championship race on the approach to Goddards Corner last September. The race was immediately red flagged and he was attended to by the BSB Medical Team. Grigor was in a serious condition and required immediate trackside intervention, including being placed into an induced coma, before he was transferred to Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham. However, eight months later, Grigor returned to the circuit, to complete the lap.
Grigor said: “Around 6054 hours later, I’ve finally finished my lap of Donington that I started in September. It’s been a long road to get to where we are today, and I am so grateful for every single person who allowed me to live out my dream for the year riding a full (almost) season at BSB. My whole team were by my side during the good times and the bad times, but we’ve never left a lap unfinished at any circuit we’ve been to, so we’re not starting now!
“I’ve been asked lots of times this weekend if I’m back to normal, but people quickly follow that question up with “well, you weren’t normal to begin with were you”! I’m definitely not at what was normal for me, and I doubt I ever will be, but just trying to get used to how my brain works now and what my body needs to get on with the job.
“We’ve currently got no plans to come back racing, but I suppose you can never say never, just not for right now. Donington is still my favourite track, and I’m glad I finished my lap. Surely, that’s another lap record to add to the CV right?
“Massive thank you goes to everyone reading this and who gave me support through my time in recovery, the amount of support I received was genuinely breathtaking, and I will be forever grateful. The bike racing community truly is amazing, and I’m proud to be a part of it, unfortunately you’ll not be getting rid of me any time soon!
“Special shout out to my amazing sponsors from through the years, you guys definitely can’t get rid of me that easy! I was at Donington with my team gear on, so Cupar Motorcycles, PWB Developments, Vetech and Plantfitter.com are still on display, I can at least add value for money to the CV. See you all at a racetrack somewhere sometime.”
