Oli Bayliss doubled up to take yet another British Supersport win – as championship leader Luke Stapleford watched his hopes of taking the title today end in the gravel.
Bayliss had shot straight into the lead at the start of the 16-lap race, closely followed by Josh Whatley and Ben Currie, as Stapleford dropped to sixth in the opening lap.
The points leader was up to fourth by the end of Lap Three but it all went wrong as he headed into the fourth lap and he crashed, bringing out the red flag.
Unable to join the restarted race, set to run over 11 laps, the Scars-Racing Ducati rider was forced to watch from the pits.
This time, it was Whatley who hit Redgate first -but Bayliss was first out, taking the lead and staying ahead for the full 11 laps with Whatley running second and Jack Kennedy third.
On Lap Five, Jack Mahaffy crashed out and his machine took out TJ Toms and Max Wadsworth. The Safety Car was deployed to allow the track to be cleaned up and it headed in with just two laps left.
Bayliss controlled the pack to stay ahead and although Kennedy kept close to Whatley and looked like he may make a last lap move, he eventually settled for third and a good haul of points.
Kennedy’s team-mate Dean Harrison was fourth with Carter Brown fifth, as Cam Swain took Cup honours, ahead of Keo Walker and Ben Tolliday.
The result means Stapleford’s points lead has been reduced from 69 to 45 with it all to play for at the final round in a fortnight.
